The 48 years old Afro-american Duane Buck is to be executed by the state of Texas on September 15th. He spent the last 15 years of his life in Texas Death Row for the killing of two people, his ex-girl friend and a friends of hers. Buck was sentenced to death as his defense failed to provide significant objections to the tight contradictory of the prosecutor. Psychological counseling however showed that Buck could not pose any future danger to society. Subsequent requests for review of the trial presented by Duane’s lawyers were not taken into consideration by the Court where he had been judged in the first instance nor by the Court of Appeals of Texas who rejected the application in 2003. During the years he spent in prison, Buck revealed his real frail but nonviolent character.
The appeal to save
Duane
The Community of Sant’Egidio urges everybody to share its appeal aiming to spare
Duane’s life from the execution, sending the following statement to the competent authorities of Texas by fax or e-mail.
Urgent appeal brought out by the Community of Sant’Egidio
to save the life of John Duane Buck,
sentenced to death
Dear Governor
Excellences
I am writing to
express my deep concern over a ruling that sentenced to death Mr. Duane
Buck, in spite of an extremely rough and inadequate lawyer appointed by the
court, due to his lack of financial means. During the years he
spent in prison, Mr. Buck revealed his real frail but nonviolent character.
He will not pose any future danger to society.
I urge you to
intervene on his behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman punishment from
being meted out against him.
I implore you to
ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
