Tony
passed his prime youth in the misery and the violence of a ghetto in
Detroit as well many other afro-Americans like him. He was still a
teen-ager when he moved to Texas.
In December 1991 he was arrested and charged
with murdering on a declaration given by one man of evil repute who
probably tried to cover the real offender. He was just a bit more than
eighteen. He was sentenced in 1993.
Tony has always resolutely affirmed his
innocence and he could not ever rely on an adequate legal defence.
Many accusatory procedures came out rather
doubtful, starting from his alleged recognition as the author of the
crime, made by photos which did not clearly show his face. His execution
is tragically set on December 7th 2005.
The appeal to save
Tony
The Community of Sant’Egidio urges
everybody to share its appeal aiming to spare Tony’s life from the
execution, sending the following statement to the competent
authorities of Texas by fax or e-mail.
Urgent appeal brought out by the Community of Sant’Egidio
to save the life of Tony Egbuna Ford,
sentenced to death
Dear Governor
Your Excellencies
I am writing to express my deep concern over a ruling
that sentenced to death Mr. Tony Egbuna Ford, even though he was submitted
to an unfair trial, tainted by an inadequate legal defence.
I urge you to intervene on his behalf to prevent this
cruel and inhuman punishment from being meted out against him.
I implore you to
ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
