Hector,
an Hispanic man from Mexico, is detained in the Livingston's death
row since 1990, found guilty of a murder during a robbery of a
convenience store. He has always claimed himself innocent. The only
witness against him comes from the victim's sister, who was on the
spot when the crime happened. Nevertheless, her declarations show
several weak points. Hector's brother-in-law, who allegedly was a
party to the crime, played a crucial role during the trial: he
clearly pointed to Hector as perpetrator of the killing, in exchange
for immunity. But he denied his accusation in a further phase of the
proceedings. Any concrete evidence has ever demonstrated Hector's
responsibility. Any fingerprint of his was ever found on the spot.
Hector, who had been living in poor economic state, could not afford
any experienced lawyer, and his attorney appointed by the court
supported him too weakly and with no great care.
