His
story
Edward,
who suffers from a serious mental handicap due to an old head injury
and to his chronicle alcoholism since he was very young, was
sentenced to death in October 1994 for robbery and murder. His
alleged homosexuality -in opposition to the International Covenant
on Civil an Political Rights, which U.S. ratified in 1992, that
warrants a defendant the immunity from any discrimination on his
sexual orientation- was used as an aggravating circumstance of his
responsibility in the murder, during his trial. Besides Edward could
not get quite a fair legal assistance, and one of his lawyers had
his law license recently suspended because of his incompetence. Edward's
execution is sadly set to next October 3rd.
The
appeal to save Edward
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Edward's life from the execution, sending the
following statement to the Governor of North Carolina by e-mail or
fax, as it occurred in the past.
URGENT
APPEAL BROUGHT IN BY THE COMMUNITY OF SANT'EGIDIO TO SAVE THE LIFE OF EDWARD
ERNEST HARTMAN, SENTENCED TO DEATH
Your
Excellency
We
are writing to express our deep concern over a ruling that sentenced to
death Mr. Edward Ernest Hartman, who is a mentally ill person, in spite of
an unfair trial tainted by inadequate lawyers appointed by the court, as
well as moral discriminations opposing to international treaties ratified by
United States.
We
urge you to intervene on his behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman
punishment from being meted out against him. We implore you to ensure that
this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
Respectfully
Yours
