His
story
Lorenzo
Morris, 51, is an
Afro-American man coming from a very humble family. He was arrested
in 1990 after having assailed and seriously injured an old man,
trying to get some drug. The aged man died eight months after for
cropped up complications. Lorenzo’s lawyer says they were due to
poor nursing home care, particularly in disregarding his bed-sores.
Besides,
the law still acting at the time of Lorenzo’s trial, but now
out-of-order, prevented jurors to consider mitigating factors like
his hard childhood, drug abuse and above all his shocking military
experience in Vietnam, where he came back home from in disastrous
physical and psychical conditions. Thus, today jurors could take
into account these extenuating circumstances, but Lorenzo has lost
all his appeals by now, and his execution is tragically set on
November 2nd 2004.
The
appeal to save Lorenzo
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Lorenzo's life from the execution, sending the
following statement to the competent authorities of Texas by fax or
e-mail.
Urgent
appeal brought out by the Community of Sant'Egidio to save the life of
Lorenzo Morris, sentenced to death
Dear
Governor
Your
Excellencies
I
am writing to express my deep concern over a ruling that sentenced to death
Mr. Lorenzo Morris, even though all mitigating circumstances that might ease
the verdict had not fairly taken into account because of rules not in force
anymore. I urge you to intervene on his behalf to prevent this cruel and
inhuman punishment from being meted out against him. I implore you to ensure
that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
Respectfully
Yours
