His
story
|
Ikram
was sentenced to death on May 24th 2004 by the Tashkent city
court. He was convicted of murdering a woman and a man on May
2001. However he has always been asserting that he was forced
to confess such crimes under torture. Indeed his declarations
were ever scrutinized neither by police officers or by judges.
The United Nations Human Rights Committee urged the
authorities of Uzbekistan to stay his execution, whose date is
unknown so that it might take place on any day. |
The
appeal to save Ikram
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Ikram's life from the execution sending the
following statement to the competent authorities of Uzbekistan by
fax or e-mail.
Urgent
appeal brought in by the Community of Sant'Egidio to save the life of Ikram
Mukhtarov, sentenced to death
Dear
President,
Excellencies,
I
am writing to express my deep concern over a ruling that sentenced to death
Mr. Ikram Mukhtarov, even though the alleged tortures he suffered to be
forced to confess the crimes he was convicted of, which he firmly rejects,
were never taken into consideration by the court's verdict.
I
urge you to intervene on his behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman
punishment from being meted out against him.
I
implore you to ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried
out.
Respectfully
(signature
and date)
