Her
story
In
1997, Afsaneh was passing a holiday with her husband in the Isle of
Kish. Their apartment was close to a local policeman's one. The man
was a friend of theirs. One day he assailed Afsaneh trying to rape
her, in a moment she was alone at home. She stabbed him deadly,
acting to defend herself from his assault. Then she was arrested and
sentenced to death for the first time in 2001. The Supreme
Court upheld the sentence on September 28th 2003, denying the
self-defence on her behalf. Now she is detained in Bandar Abbas
prison, in southern Iran, which is a jail sadly renowned for its
poor conditions. Afsaneh's lawyers are determined to ask the opening
of a new inquiry that could prove the need to protect herself from
the violence she was encountering.
The
appeal to save Afsaneh
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Afsaneh's life from the execution, sending the
following statement to His Excellency Ayatollah Sayed 'Ali Khamanei,
Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, by e-mail.
URGENT
APPEAL BROUGHT IN BY THE COMMUNITY OF SANT'EGIDIO TO SAVE THE LIFE OF
AFSANEH NOUROOZI, SENTENCED TO DEATH
Your
Excellency
We
are writing to express our deep concern over a ruling that sentenced to
death Mrs. Afsaneh Nouroozi, even tough she acted in self-defence to escape
an impending rape. We urge you to intervene on her behalf to prevent this
cruel and inhuman punishment from being meted out against her. We implore
you to ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
Respectfully
yours
