His
story
Rizana Nafeek, a young Muslim girl,
emigrated from her little village of Mutur, Sri Lanka, to
Saudi Arabia in 2005, when she was just 17, because of the
hard misery of her family.
She started working as housemaid and
baby-sitter in the town of Dawadami, until not so long time
after, the little child of her boss died while she was
feeding him with some milk.
Rizana was accused to have killed him and
was arrested, without a lawyer who might have defended her.
Two years after, in 2007, she was sentenced to death during
a trial without any serious evidence against her, simply
based on a confession undersigned by her, who actually could
not understand its contents, written in a foreign language.
No post-mortem report was carried out on
the body of the dead infant, to establish why he died.
The Government of Sri Lanka has engaging
itself from a long time to get the pardon from the infant’s
family.
The appeal to save Rizana
The Community of Sant’Egidio urges everybody to share its appeal aiming to spare Rizana’s life from the execution, sending the following statement to the Saudi authorities by fax or e-mail.
URGENT APPEAL BROUGHT OUT BY THE COMMUNITY OF SANT’EGIDIO TO SAVE THE LIFE OF RIZANA NAFEEK, SENTENCED TO DEATH
Your Majesty
Royal Highness
Dear President
Excellency
I am writing to express my deep concern over a ruling which sentenced to death Ms. Rizana Nafeek, in spite of a doubtfully regular trial, based on a confession written in a unknown language for her, who nevertheless was somehow forced to sign it anyway, and without any evidence scientifically reporting the real reasons of the death of the infant she allegedly killed.
I urge you to intervene on her behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman punishment from being meted out against her.
I implore you to ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
Respectfully
(signature)
