His
story
Azamat
was sentenced to death on June, 28th 2002 by the Supreme Court of
Karakalpakstan for an alleged murder of a 15 years old girl, a crime
he affirms he was forced to confess during the interrogation by the
police. At the opening of his trial, Azamat took back his wrung
confession, but the judges ignored his words and did not started up
any enquiry on the behaviour of the police officers. In Uzbekistan,
an inmate's execution happens under a full secrecy, so that his
relatives are neither warned of their next of kin's day of death,
nor of the place where he is buried. Entering the death row for
everyone indeed means disappearing in the most absolute darkness.
The
appeal to save Azamat
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Azamat's life from the execution, sending the
following statement to the competent authorities of Uzbekistan by
fax or e-mail.
URGENT
APPEAL BROUGHT IN BY THE COMMUNITY OF SANT'EGIDIO
TO

Your
Excellencies We are writing to express our deep concern over a ruling that
sentenced to death Mr. Azamat Uteev after he was forced to confess under
torture and subjected to an unfair trial.

punishment from being meted out against him.
We
implore you to ensure that cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried
out.
Respectfully
yours
