'Give it to the company to eat,' he insisted, 'for Yahweh says this, "They will eat and have some left over." With all humility and gentleness, and with patience, support each other in love. Take every care to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together. There is one Body, one Spirit, just as one hope is the goal of your calling by God. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all, over all, through all and within all." cLetturaV = "After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias- and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick. Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples. The time of the Jewish Passover was near. Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread for these people to eat?' He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do. Philip answered, 'Two hundred denarii would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.' One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said, 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?' Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as five thousand men sat down. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he then did the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted. When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing is wasted.' So they picked them up and filled twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of five barley loaves. Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.' Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back to the hills alone." cMemoria = "Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time
World day of the Grandparents and the Elderly" cOmelia = "The evangelist notes that Jesus "When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming towards him." It is proper of Jesus not to keep his eyes on himself and to look at the tired and exhausted crowds, like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus is an example to all of us so that we learn to lift our eyes from ourselves and our problems at least a little bit and be able to see a bit also others.
The crowds were staying with Jesus for they needed it. Till we do not rediscover this need it will be difficult for us to behave like those crowds. Those men and women even forgot to eat as they were listening to Jesus! And Jesus had compassion on them. And, in fact, it was he, not the disciples, who noticed that the people needed bread. Jesus calls Philip and asked him, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?"
Jesus is not in the habit of sending anyone back, even when we do not ask even though we are in need. He reads our hearts and gives us what we need. After all, this is how it is (or should be) with every good father and mother. And God is always good, both to good and recalcitrant children. He does not resist the need of his children. This is what happens in this Gospel scene. Without the disciples understanding, rather against any reasonability, Jesus orders the disciples to have the people sit down on the grass. "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures," Psalm 23 sings. When they are all seated, he takes the bread and, after having given thanks to the Father, distributes it to everyone. Different from the Synoptic Gospels, in which the disciples are given the task of handing out the bread, here Jesus himself takes and distributes the bread. He is the good shepherd who guides, takes care and nourishes his flock. He nourishes them directly an abundantly, for indeed "they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets."
Five barley loaves were sufficient to feed five thousand people. It was sufficient to put them in the Lord's hands; these hands do not keep anything for himself; they are used to open and with great generosity. The miracle started from the heart of that young boy who made his five barley loaves available for all. The miracle can continue with us, if, like that young boy, we put the little we have in the hands of the Lord, but willingly and with generosity. But he fled and he drew away back up the mountain. He did not want to devalue the urgency of bread, rather he wished to underline the need to nourish on the true bread that is friendship with him." %>
