cOmelia = "We reached the end of the year, and the first letter of John begins with the statement: "It is the last hour." An ancient tradition has people sing the ancient hymn, the Te Deum, a song of thanksgiving to the Lord for the days that he has granted us to live. It is good to remember that time is not a meaningless dimension of human lives and that our days do not last forever. Rather, days and years go by, and we are asked not to waste them, not to throw them away; we should live them in God's and people's presence. Indeed, history is not an empty shell: it is the place where our salvation happens, the place where the hard battle between good and evil, between the freedom of love and the slavery of evil, is carried on. In the language of the New Testament saying that "the last hour has come," does not mean that history is about to end, but that the time of decision has come, the final choices that this generation has to make about Jesus and his Gospel. We need to make just and peaceful todays' world. John notes with sadness that the false prophets "went out from us, but they did not belong to us." They have not been "anointed by the Holy One," that is, they do not have the Spirit of Jesus. It is not enough to be physically in the community of believers, we need to welcome the Spirit that animates it, becoming interiorly involved. This means that we have "knowledge," that is, the wisdom of the Gospel. As this year draws to a close and a new year opens, we thank the Lord for the time that has been given to us and we ask God for help to face the coming year by letting his Word guide us. May it be the lamp for our steps."
