   Letter from a prisoner:

Dear Friends of the Community of Sant'Egidio,

I read that you are helping a young man called Dominique who has been condemned to death. I'd like to help you in some way. I can imagine what it must be like to have a death sentence hanging over your head. I can imagine it because if I were in the U.S., I'd probably have been condemned to death myself. I'm lucky, because they gave me 30 years, and I know when I'll get out, unlike some of those unlucky friends who'll never see the end of their sentences. It's like having the sword of Damocles dangling over your head. I'm 25 years old and all this happened when I was 18. That's why I can imagine how it's got to feel: like being buried alive. This death penalty is an atrocity. The state becomes an executioner instead of giving us a good example, you get locked up in a prison and they forget about you in there. I hope and wait for the day when there won't be any more death penalty, and everybody can get along in a society were there's no need to commit crimes. Unfortunately all this is still faraway, but step by step we can do it.! I'd like to support your cause, but I'm just a little fish in the ocean. Let me know what I can do, and I'll be more than happy to do it, but I want to be upfront: I'm an inmate. What I can do to help might be small, but even so, I'll be happy to do it.

There's a strong solidarity among us inmates, but even you in Sant'Egidio don't joke around [].

N.
