Following the success of the "Bravo!" programme, with 3 million people legally registered in Burkina Faso, a memorandum of understanding to continue the campaign at national level signed in Rome today
October 9, 2010

The Memorandum of Understanding between the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Ministry of the Interior of Burkina Faso, signed in Sant'Egidio today by Minister Clement Sawadogo and by the President of the Community Marco Impagliazzo, is a fruit of the cooperation that has been established for years under the program BRAVO! (Birth Registration for All Versus Oblivion).

The program, begun in 2008 to ensure civil registration of all children, promotes the registration of children at birth and amend lack of registration through procedures for late registration.

Sensitizes parents and children about the importance of identity documents.

Promotes the development of civil registration systems and, through the training of agents of civil status and the programming of requirements at both the central and peripheral levels, contributes to the creation of a durable and sustainable civil register in various countries.

In Burkina Faso, by proposal of the Community of Sant'Egidio, the Government has agreed to launch a campaign for birth registration throughout the country, making completely free the procedure for late registration of births. The campaign reached in the first year of work more than 3 million people.

The aim of signing the Memorandum of Understanding is to promote the sustainability of the whole system of civil recording in order to remove the causes of lack of registration of children at birth. The protocol provides for close cooperation in the provinces and municipalities, with regular training for civil registration officers, public awareness campaigns and to make stable and enduring the system of birth registration.

After the International Conference held in Ouagadougou on June 28, "Help me to exist" which was attended by ministers and representatives from 11 African countries and the training course for civil recording officers, today's step is an important one of the of the joint path of Community of Sant'Egidio and the Government of Burkina Faso.
