Visit of solidarity and friendship by Sant'Egidio to the Roman Jewish Community after the attacks in Paris and the terrorist alert

printable version

A delegation of Sant'Egidio, composed by the founder of the Community, Andrea Riccardi, its president Marco Impagliazzo and the Bishop of Frosinone Monsignor Ambrogio Spreafico, visited today the Jewish Community of Rome to express its solidarity after the attacks in Paris that hit hard also the Jews and the terrorist alert level that has been raised throughout Europe.

The meeting took place significantly in the Jewish school "Vittorio Polacco", where the delegation was welcomed by Rome's Chief Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni, and the president of Rome's Jewish community, Riccardo Pacifici. After strolling around in the classrooms and visiting the facilities that house students from elementary courses at the high school, there was a lunch in the sign of a friendship that has lasted for so many years and that - as Pacifici himself recalled - every 16 October has as its high point the "march of memory", organised together to remember the day when, in 1943, over a thousand Roman Jews were deported to extermination camps.

At the end of the meeting, Marco Impagliazzo expressed his solidarity on behalf of Sant'Egidio underlining "the value of exchange and dialogue to counter, in a difficult time, every feeling of confrontation and conflict in the name of religion or membership: in particular schools, such as this, and places of worship must be considered sacred and inviolable".

"The Jewish Quarter - said the founder of the Community of Sant'Egidio Andrea Riccardi - with its centres of education and culture, has always been and will remain in the future as a valuable meeting and exchange place that we can not give up on. An opportunity to build together a future of peace and unity in diversity, against all violence and intolerance".
