"Living together in multicultural cities" is the theme of the meeting which was held today at the Italian Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo, sponsored by the Sant'Egidio Community and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Chinese and Italian scholars have approached from different angles an issue which, said the president of the Community of Sant'Egidio Marco Impagliazzo, puts the challenge of integration and of "creatively planning strategies for living together, taking into account the global phenomenon of migration, in a time when the majority of the world's population lives in cities. "
"A world of people," as pointed out by Cardinal Crescenzo Sepe, Archbishop of Naples, who has in his diocese a significant Chinese community.
The meeting was concluded by the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano, who expressed his appreciation for the initiative of the Community of Sant'Egidio, which "can be encountered in many parts of the world, constantly striving to maintain harmony and peace. The theme chosen - continued the President - is particularly important at a time when if there is no hospitality to foreigners and migrants, conflicts and even wars may raise."
