MP George Deeb Neameh called on Thursday for "completely
abolishing" capital punishment and for examining the true
social and economic causes of crime. The MP said that
experiences worldwide proved the death penalty did not put an
"actual" end to crime, since it treated the crime
itself rather than its cause.
"Only social justice leads to economic and
psychological stability and decreases aggression and criminal
tendencies."
Neameh called for replacing the death penalty with life
imprisonment and also urged that there should be a major
improvement in prison conditions. He said that prisons should
act as rehabilitation centers rather than just places where
sentences are served.
He also called for improving the Penal Code in a bid to
produce effective measures to protect society other than
through the use of the death penalty.
Neameh also urged Beirut to sign the 1991 UN agreement
obliging signatory states to abolish the death penalty. |
