In coincidenza con l'insediamento di George W. Bush alla Casa Bianca oltre duecento persone hanno inscenato oggi pomeriggio a Parigi una manifestazione di protesta contro la pena di morte negli Stati Uniti.  I manifestanti si sono riuniti davanti al teatro dell'Opera Garnier, al centro della capitale, e hanno srotolato un lungo striscione nero su cui erano riportati in lettere dorate i nomi delle 683 persone giustiziate in Usa dal 1977 alla fine del 2000. Hanno anche issato cartelli con la scritta ''pena di morte = crimine di stato''. In precedenza un centinaio di persone sono state bloccate dalla polizia mentre nel quadro delle stesse proteste contro la pena capitale negli Stati Uniti cercavano di dirigersi verso il ponte della Grenelle ai piedi di una versione della statua della Liberta' regalata nell'Ottocento dalla Francia agli Usa.

Some 300 people gathered Saturday in central Paris to march against the death penalty in the United States, a protest timed to coincide with the inauguration of George W. Bush as the new US president. The protesters unfurled black banners with the names of 683 people executed in the US since the restoration of the death penalty in 1976. The march, expected to end in front of the US embassy, was organized by several political and human rights groups including Amnesty International and the French Movement against Racism and for Friendship between Peoples (MRAP). Protesters had earlier gathered on an island in the River Seine which is home to a copy of the Statue of Liberty. They also expressed support for the death-row prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was sentenced to death for killing a policeman but has always proclaimed his innocence. George W. Bush signed more than 140 execution.
