UN official opposes death penalty
UN
chief war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte attended a campaign in Rome on
Wednesday to spare the life of Osama bin Laden and said it should be
possible for the world's most wanted man to face an international court.
"I
believe that an international court could be a possibility for proceeding
against bin Laden because his crimes are crimes against humanity," Del
Ponte told a news conference.
"Since
we are in the process of creating an international court with a specific
jurisdiction over these crimes, I think it would be an idea to try in him
in such a court," she said.
Del
Ponte heads the U.N. International Tribunal in The Hague where former
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic faces charges of genocide and crimes
against humanity.
