Arizona Governor Signs Law Prohibiting the Execution of the Mentally Retarded
On
April 26, 2001, Arizona Governor Jane Hull signed legislation to
ban the state from seeking the death penalty for persons with
mental retardation. The
legislation also prohibits the execution of defendants with mental
retardation who are already on death row.
Arizona is now the 14th state to forbid such executions.
