California Gubernatorial Candidate Open to Moratorium
Richard
Riordan, a Republican currently campaigning for Governor of California,
recently stated that he supports the death penalty but would be open to
halting executions in the state if it were shown that they were being
unfairly imposed. "Are we
applying the death penalty fairly, honestly?" asked Riordan, the
former mayor of Los Angeles. "You
can't be afraid to look at things like that."
(San Jose Mercury News, 1/24/02) California currently has the
largest death row population in the nation, with more than 600 inmates.
