UGANDA: Robber Handed Death Sentence

The High Court sitting in Bushenyi March 25 sentenced a robber to death.

Court presided over by Justice P. Mugamba heard that Katunda Johnson, 24, a resident of Bitereko in Ruhinda County, Bushenyi in 1999 stole a radio cassette from Begumisa Julius of the same area.

Prosecution, led by State Attorney Silver Mwesigwa, argued the accused did not only take the radio but also injured his victims with a panga.

He proved that the accused cut off Begumisa's right arm leaving him handicapped for life.

The accused also inflicted serious injury on Mrs Begumisa's arm.

Justice Mugamba said he was satisfied with evidence against Katunda and classified his crime as aggravated robbery.

He said by carrying a panga, the accused could even have killed have killed his victims.

"I condemn you to suffer death in the manner prescribed by the law," the judge ruled.

Katunda was immediately handcuffed and whisked away by prison warders as he cried.

The High Court will hear cases of capital nature in the district till next month.
