WASHINGTON, 09 MAG - Un uomo che nel 1993 aveva picchiato a sangue e violentato una ragazzina di 14 anni in Texas e' stato messo a morte giovedi' sera, nel carcere di Huntsville (nello stesso Stato).

   Reginald Reeves, 28 anni, e' stato l'11.o detenuto la cui condanna capitale e' stata eseguita quest'anno nel Texas.

   L'uomo, al momento di stendersi sul lettino nella camera della morte per ricevere l'iniezione letale, ha ripetutamente chiesto perdono e, rivolgendosi ai genitori della ragazza, ha detto: ''Vi chiedo scusa con tutto il il cuore e l'anima''. Reeves era un operaio,all'epoca del delitto di 19 anni. La sua vittima, Jenny Lynn Weeks, era una ragazzina appena scappata dalla casa d'accoglienza cui era stata affidata, a Paris (Texas), e che aveva raggiunto Clarksville, dove incontro' Reginald, che la ospito' in casa per qualche giorno, fino al delitto.

   L'esecuzione di Huntsville e' avvenuta proprio nel giorno in cui il Maryland e' diventato il secondo Stato dell'Unione a dichiarare una moratoria sulla pena di morte. L'Illinois aveva preso un'analoga decisione nel 2000.

   La moratoria del Maryland restera' in vigore finche' non sara' stato completato uno studio di uno specialista della Universita' dello Stato (che dovrebbe essere pronto a settembre e che sara' poi discusso dall'Assemblea statale) sulla equita' di applicazione delle condanne capitali, soprattutto sotto il profilo della discriminazione razziale.

   Nei bracci della morte del Maryland sono in attesa dell'esecuzione tredici condannati: nove sono di colore. 

   Invece, in Alabama dovrebbe essere messa a morte, sulla sedia elettrica, nelle prossime ore, Lynda Lyon Block, 53 anni, accusata di avere ucciso un poliziotto nel 1993.

   Sara' la prima donna a morire per mano del boia in Alabama dal 1957, se non vi sara' rinvio in extremis dell'esecuzione. 

   Sara', inoltre, la nona donna ad essere messa a morte negli Usa da quando nel 1976 sono ricominciate le esecuzioni.

      Lynda sara' l'ultima persona a morire sulla sedia elettrica in Alabama: dal primo luglio lo stato adottera' il metodo della iniezione.

   Al momento, oltre 3.700 persone sono rinchiuse nei bracci della morte delle carceri dei 38 Stati che continuano ad applicare la pena capitale. Nel solo Texas, lo Stato che esegue piu' condanne, dal 1982 sono state messe a morte 267 persone, compreso Reeves: altre cinque condanne dovrebbero essere eseguite n maggio e altrettante in giugno.

 HUNTSVILLE, Texas - A convicted killer was executed by injection Thursday for the 1993 fatal beating and rape of a 14-year-old girl he befriended after she ran away from a group foster home.

In a lengthy final statement, Reginald Reeves, 28, apologized repeatedly.

 "I do apologize with all my heart and soul," he said as the victim's mother nodded. "I want you to know I do love you. We're all one big family in humanity."

 Since the U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) reinstated the death penalty 25 years ago, more than 770 inmates have been put to death in the United States by the federal government and authorities in 32 states. Texas has executed more than 265 of them.

 Reeves surrendered to police in Clarksville in northeast Texas in 1993 a day after the body of Jenny Lynn Weeks was found stuffed in a closet of a vacant home. Medical examiners determined she died of strangulation.

 "She was chewed on, bitten, raped and sodomized, then severely beaten, beaten to death, then wrapped up in a rug and dumped in an old abandoned house," Red River County District Attorney Val Varley said.

 In the final entry in her diary dated Sept. 9, 1993, Weeks wrote of being a bit lonely but otherwise happy living at Reeves' apartment. She was killed later that day.

 Testimony showed Weeks was in a group foster home when she joined another resident, a 17-year-old girl, who was running away to Clarksville, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) away.

 The other girl met up with her boyfriend, a friend of Reeves, who offered to share his apartment with Weeks and she agreed.

Killer dies after long apology

An apologetic convicted killer was executed Thursday for the fatal beating and rape of a 14-year-old girl he befriended after she ran away from a group foster home.

In a lengthy final statement, Reginald Reeves, 28, apologized repeatedly and preached forgiveness.

"I pray we may all learn to love and forgive and have peace in this world," he said while strapped to the death chamber gurney.

Reeves had a history of assaults as a juvenile but no adult criminal record when he surrendered to police in Clarksville in northeast Texas in 1993, a day after the body of Jenny Lynn Weeks was found stuffed in a closet of a vacant home.

Weeks' mother, father and stepfather were watching a few feet away and Reeves turned to look directly at them.

"I do apologize with all my heart and soul," he said as the victim's mother nodded.

 As the drugs began taking effect, he gasped, sputtered and took a couple of breaths before he stopped moving. He was pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m., 10 minutes after receiving the lethal injection.

 He was the 11th Texas prisoner put to death this year. 2 more condemned killers are on the execution schedule for next week.
