LEBANON:
Rights
body signs Strasbourg anti-death penalty declaration
The
People's Rights Movement on Friday became the 1st Lebanese organization to
sign the Strasbourg Declaration Against Capital Punishment.
In
a statement issued following the signing, the organization said the
declaration was adopted last June during the First World Convention Against
the Death Penalty.
A
campaign was then kicked off under the banner of an "international
alliance for the cancellation of capital punishment."
It
said that capital punishment was a from of murder, "even if it is in
the name of the state and the law."
The
movement commended "what has been achieved in Lebanon," referring
to the cancellation of law number 94/302, which states that "a
murderer is to be murdered."
