MESSO A MORTE IN GEORGIA UOMO DI 62 ANNI

         Le ultime parole: sono contrario alla pena di morte Jackson (Georgia), 25 gen. (Ap) - E' stato giustiziato con iniezione letale in Georgia Ronald Spivey, 62 anni, condannato a morte per aver ucciso un poliziotto nel corso di una rapina nel 1976.

   Spivey avrebbe dovuto morire sulla sedia elettrica nel marzo del 2001, ma l'esecuzione fu bloccata a 4 ore dalla fine perch� la Corte suprema dello Stato intendeva esaminare la protesta degli avvocati per i quali si trattava di una "punizione crudele e inusuale", e quindi vietata dalla Costituzione. In ottobre in effetti la Corte della Georgia ha vietato l'uso della sedia elettrica e introdotto al suo posto la sola iniezione letale.

   Nella sua ultima dichiarazione, Ronald Spivey ha chiesto perdono alla famiglia della vittima ma ha criticato la pena di morte: "Se avessi mille vite di cui disporre, non riuscirei a dire abbastanza a lungo quanto mi dispiace. Ho provato ad essere una persona buona e utile negli ultimi 25 anni" ha detto l'uomo.

Spivey � il terzo condannato a morte giustiziato negli Usa dall'inizio dell'anno.

Georgia Executes Cop Killer

JACKSON, Ga. - A 62-year-old man was executed by injection Thursday for killing an off-duty Columbus police officer during a robbery in 1976.

 In his final statement, Ronald Spivey apologized to the families of the victim and criticized the death penalty, saying he had become a different man in prison.

 ``If I had a million lifetimes, I could never say I'm sorry enough,'' he said. ``I've tried to be a decent and useful human being these last 25 years.''

 Spivey was to die in the electric chair March 6, 2001. But the state Supreme Court halted the execution with four hours to go, saying it needed time to review whether the chair was cruel and unusual punishment.

 The court threw out the use of the electric chair in October, shifting all Georgia executions to injection and clearing the way again for Spivey to be put to death.

 Spivey was sentenced to death for the murder of Officer Bill Watson on Dec. 28, 1976. Watson, working as a security guard, interrupted a robbery at a Columbus bar and was shot twice.
