L'intervento del Presidente del Consiglio Berlusconi, a nome dell�Unione Europea.

 Signor Presidente, Signori Capi di Stato e di Governo, Signor Segretario Generale, Signore e Signori,

ho l�onore di rivolgermi alla 58ma Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite a nome dell�Unione Europea, che l�Italia presiede fino al 31 dicembre 2003.

L�Unione Europea � e rester� sempre impegnata nella promozione e protezione di tutti i diritti umani e di tutte le libert� fondamentali. In questo contesto ribadiamo il nostro forte sostegno all�abolizione universale della pena di morte. Negli ultimi anni si sono registrati progressi importanti in questo campo anche grazie al contributo della societ� civile. L�abolizione � il nostro obiettivo principale, ma dove ancora vige la pena capitale chiediamo che la sua applicazione venga bloccata attraverso una moratoria generalizzata sulle esecuzioni.

The intervention of President Berlusconi, on behalf of the European Union.

Mr. President, Heads of State and Government, Mr. Secretary-General, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have the honour to address the 58th General Assembly of the United Nations on behalf of the European Union, whose presidency  Italy holds until  December 31, 2003.

The EU is and will always remain committed to the promotion and protection of all human rights and all the fundamental freedoms. In this context I reiterate our a strong support for achieving a universal abolition of the death penalty. In recent years important progress has been made in this direction, thanks in part to civil society. Abolition is our primary goal. Where capital punishment continues to exist, however, we are requesting that its application be impeded through a general moratorium on executions. (�)
