A
Delegation of the Community has given a mattress to every inmate of
the prison of Tchollir II - about 130 people - in the North of
Cameroon.
In
the prison of Tcholir II, an isolated place located many miles
from the main city of the area, conditions are hard: there is no
constant medical treatment and food is scarce. Mattresses had always
been missing, so the Community decided to make sure the inmates
received them.
For
several years now the Community has taken care of these prisoners.
Some of them have been sentenced to death. The Community helps them
with medical aid, food supplements and regular visits. Many of the
prisoners keep up a correspondence with people of the Community of
Rome.
In
the past two years, some of them were released thanks to the efforts
of the Community, that contacted the judges and the prison
authorities. Other prisoners had their death sentence commuted (16
in the whole country). A few months ago the prisoners even started
holding the prayer of the Community.
The
prison director, the warders and the doctor were all present at the
delivery of the mattresses: it was a wonderful celebration, full of
thanks, songs and dances. Afterwards a prayer was held, where they
remembered Dominique Green. The prisoners prayed for him and they
signed the appeal for his life to be saved.
