 Aasia Bibi

Pakistan – 45  years old

 Sentenced to death

Her story

Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman with five sons, is a poor peasant living at Ittanwalai, in the Punjab region.

In June 2009, while working as usual in a large land property, she had a quarrel with some of her Muslim colleagues, during which she was accused by them of insulting Islam.

After being arrested by the police, she was tried and charged with blasphemy, which is an “offence” punished by the criminal code, and because of that she received a death sentence on November 7th 2010.

In Pakistan anybody was ever executed for that kind of “crime”. Her husband brought in an appeal to the higher court, so the sentence is suspended, while waiting for the following steps of judgement.

The appeal to save Aasia

The Community of Sant’Egidio urges everybody to share its own appeal aiming to spare Aasia’s life from the execution, sending the following statement to the President and the Minister of Justice of Pakistan.

Urgent appeal brought out by the Community of Sant’Egidio
to save the life of Aasia Bibi,
sentenced to death

Dear President

Your Excellency

I am writing to express my deep concern over a ruling that sentenced to death Mrs. Aasia Bibi for trifling reasons, by a punishment completely disproportionate as regards the alleged crime carried out by her, and on the grounds of confused proofs, purely rising from religious grudge.

I urge you to intervene on her behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman punishment from being meted out against her.

I implore you to ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out

Respectfully yours

(signature and date)
