Sakineh Ashtiani

Iran – 43 years old

 Sentenced to death

Her story

Five years ago, the husband of Sakineh was killed. The woman, mother of two sons, was charged with that murder, and, more, indicted as an adulteress, was sentenced to death by stoning.

She desperately proclaims  her innocence. Her lawyer, who was forced to leave  Iran, speaks out about an unlawful sentence, issued without any evidence, without the chance to defend herself during the trial.

The Iranian judicial authorities assert that the sentence has been “reduced” to hanging, and that her case is provisionally under review.

Sakineh, publicly, more times, has categorically declared she was  sentenced by false allegations. The alleged killer of her husband was pardoned by one of the sons of hers, and so he could avoid the death sentence.

In spite of the seeming suspension of the proceedings against her, Sakineh fears she could be executed in secret at any moment, without any warning.

The appeal to save Sakineh

The Community of Sant’Egidio urges everybody to share its appeal aiming to spare Sakineh’s life from the execution, sending the following statement to the supreme Authority of Iran.

Urgent appeal brought out by the Community of Sant’Egidio
to save the life of Sakineh Ashtiani,
sentenced to death

Excellency

I am writing to express my deep concern over a ruling that sentenced to death Mrs. Sakineh Ashtiani, in spite of a doubtfully regular trial, without any serious evidence about the charges on her, and without allow her the chance to have an adequate legal defence. Besides, the alleged, real guilty of the crime she is blamed on, is a well-known man, who was even pardoned by one of the sons of hers.

I urge you to intervene on her behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman punishment from being meted out against her.

I implore you to ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.

Respectfully yours
