story
Sarimu was sentenced to death by stoning
on May 8th 2002 by an Islamic court in the village of Baranda,
inside the Nigerian state of Jigawa. He was accused of raping a
nine-year old girl. Afterwards the man, father of two children,
appealed to the court of Dutse (the main town of Jigawa state),
saying he was forced to confess that crime by the violence of the
policemen. Besides his lawyer has claimed the mental insanity on him
and denounced that Sarimu was not given enough time to defend
himself during the trial. His appeal hearing is set on July, 17th
2003.
The
appeal to save Sarimu
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Sarimu's life from a death sentence by stoning,
sending the following statement to the competent authorities of
Nigeria, as it occurred in the past, by fax or e-mail.

are writing to express our deep concern over a ruling issued by the Islamic
court of Baranda that sentenced to death by stoning Mr. Sarimu Mohammed
Mallam Ado Baranda.
We
urge you to intervene on his behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman
punishment from being meted out against him. We implore you to ensure that
this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
