His
story
Michael,
accused of murder, is on death row at Atmore, Alabama. Many are the
doubts surrounding his alleged guilt. A false confession was
extorted from him by the police, blackmailing him by arresting his
live-in girlfriend. Besides, an eyewitness that was took apart on
trial would not point out him as the author of the crime. His court
appointed attorneys acted weakly and with no professional skill on
his behalf, as often happens to whom could not allow to pay
qualified lawyers. Finally, one of the jurors revealed himself as a
clerk of the court, so he knew pretty well both the judge and the
prosecutor of the trial. Michael then has always denied the charge
of murder pending on him, vowing he had just an accessory role in
the event.
The
appeal to save Michael
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Michael's life from the execution, sending the
following statement to the Governor of Alabama, as it occurred in
the past, by fax or e-mail.

APPEAL BROUGHT IN BY THE COMMUNITY OF SANT'EGIDIO TO SAVE THE LIFE OF
MICHAEL THOMPSON, SENTENCED TO DEATH
Excellency
We are writing to express our deep concern over the pending execution of Mr.
Michael Thompson, despite of an irregular trial, tainted by a forced
confession and inexperienced court appointed attorneys, as well as by
doubtful evidences and a not competent jury. We urge you to intervene on his
behalf to prevent this cruel and inhuman punishment from being meted out
against him. We implore you to ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence
is not carried out.
