His
story
 Evgenij
was sentenced to death in October 2002 for an alleged double murder
committed during a robbery in a flat in Tashkent. The trial against
him is indeed full of shadows. Actually, no bloodstains were found
either on the knives supposedly used for the killing, or on Evgenij's
clothes. He is thought the executor of the crime, but any survey was
ever carried out to show that for sure. In the ruling there are no
references to any investigation about all the events, but it is just
reported the wrapping up of the prosecutors. The youthful age of the
boy was not taken into consideration in the judgment. While in
prison, he was even heavily beaten by the police and the victims'
relatives.
The
appeal to save Evgenij
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Evgenij's life from the execution, sending the
following statement to the competent authorities of Uzbekistan by
fax or e-mail.

APPEAL BROUGHT IN BY THE COMMUNITY OF SANT'EGIDIO TO SAVE THE LIFE OF
EVGENIJ GUGNIN, SENTENCED TO DEATH
Your
Excellencies We are writing to express our deep concern over a ruling that
sentenced to death Mr. Evgenij Gugnin after an unfair and iniquitous
trial.
We
urge you to intervene on his behalf to prevent that cruel and inhuman
punishment from being meted out against him. We implore you to ensure that
cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
