Pope to visit Roman memorial to modern witnesses to the faith

Pope Benedict XVI will visit a memorial to contemporary Christians who died for the faith on April 7.

The papal visit will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the St. Egidio community, which built the memorial with encouragement from the late Pope John Paul II.

The memorial, located in the basilica of St. Bartholomew, includes tributes to Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was killed by a death squad in El Salvador in 1980; Mexican Cardinal Juan Posadas Ocampo, who was gunned down at the airport in Guadalajara in 1993; and Father Andrea Sontoro, who was assassinated in his parish in Trabzon, Turkey, in 2006.
