The Holy Father Benedict XVI received in audience on 1 September, the Feast of St. Giles (Sant’Egidio, the saint from whom the Community takes its name), Professor Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Community of Sant’Egidio, President Marco Impagliazzo and His Holy Excellence Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia, Bishop of Terni-Narni-Amelia. The audience was in view of the Interreligious Meeting on Prayer for Peace, called “The Civilization of Peace: Faiths and Cultures in Dialogue”, which will be held in Cyprus from 16 to 18 November, 2008.
Also confronted during the course of the audience were the themes of world poverty and a cure for AIDS in Africa, to which the Community of Sant’Egidio contributes greatly with the DREAM program: 60,000 sick currently under treatment in ten different African countries, in addition to 10,000 children of HIV positive mothers born healthy.
