The night between 10th and 11th August 2007, four children died in the flames of a fire distroying their shack under the flyover in Pian di Rota, near Livorno (Italy). In the same place where this tragedy happened, the Community of Sant'Egidio gathered to remember Menji, Lenuca, Daciu and Eva, jointly with the Romenian Orthodox Community of Livorno, the children's families, and a number of friends and other civil association working in the city.
In a cozy atmosphere of emotion and familiarity, several speeches were given. Among those, an old lady from Livorno, Rosa, mentioned how she went from having prejudices to feeling solidarity, and Fr. Vasile Pancau, from the Romenian Orthodox Church, focussing on of love arising from the closeness among catholic and orthodox believers representing a strenght in the past and in the future. He also gave thanks because 'the Romenian population is taken under a warm consideration.'
The small cerimony ended by laying down some flowers on the cross remembering the little victims and by a prayer in Romenian.
