The Chilean senate has voted in favor of ending capital punishment and increasing the minimum term to be served under a life sentence from 20 to 30 years.

The bill will be submitted to the constitutional committee for a final review before it becomes law.  The Chilean justice minister, Jose Antonio Gomez, said the vote was a significant step towards establishing a state and society that defended individual rights and general well-being.
