ATMORE, Alabama (AP) _ The U.S. Supreme Court blocked the execution of   David Larry Nelson less than three hours before it was to take place   Thursday, granting a stay until the court can review his appeal in a quarter-century-old murder case.

Nelson's attorneys filed papers with the court earlier Thursday saying Nelson has collapsed veins and that lethal injection would be so painful it would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Nelson, 58, had been sentenced to die on Thursday afternoon for the Jan. 1, 1978, shooting death of Wilson Thompson while Thompson was with Nelson's girlfriend.

Nelson also was convicted in the shooting death of a cab driver the night before.

Nelson has been tried twice and had four sentencing hearings in what has been one of the longest death penalty appeals in the state of Alabama.

The Supreme Court said the stay will be lifted if the court later decides not to hear Nelson's full appeal.

Nelson once told a jury and a judge that he wanted to be executed. But when he was scheduled for execution in 1996, he received a stay because of a physician's statement that he could be a kidney donor for a seriously ill brother.

The operation did not take place.

ALABAMA, CORTE SUPREMA BLOCCA ESECUZIONE

WASHINGTON, - L'esecuzione di David Larry Nelson, condannato a morte per omicidio, e' stata sospesa dalla Corte Suprema degli Stati Uniti quando mancavano meno di tre ore all'iniezione letale.

E' accaduto ieri, ad Atmore, in Alabama, come riferisce la stampa locale, Gli avvocati di Nelson, il cui delitto risale a 25 anni or sono, hanno segnalato che lo stato delle vene dell'uomo renderebbe l'iniezione letale cosi' dolorosa da farne una punizione ''crudele e inusuale'' - illegale -.

I giudici supremi hanno sospeso l' esecuzione, in attesa di valutare il caso, che viene portato alla loro attenzione poco dopo che l'iniezione legale e' stata messa in discussione perche' sarebbe, in generale, piu' dolorosa di quanto non s'era finora creduto.

Nelson, 58 anni, uccise nel 1978 due persone a distanza di poche ore: un tassista di Birmingham e un uomo di Kimberly che era in compagnia della sua fidanzata.
