05 mar HUNTSVILLE, Texas - A condemned inmate was spared Thursday evening less than an hour before he could have been taken to the Texas death chamber for killing a man who was shot 10 times in the head.Lawyers for Yokamon Hearn, 25, contend he may be mentally retarded and want time to pursue the claim. The U.S. Supreme Court has barred the execution of the mentally retarded. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed to the delay but also set an accelerated briefing schedule to ensure the appeals would not be prolonged, said Dallas County prosecutor Lori Ordiway. Hearn faces execution by injection for the 1998 shooting of a 23-year-old Plano stockbroker abducted at gunpoint from a Dallas car wash six years ago. According to testimony at his trial, Hearn bragged to friends about how he <domed> Frank Meziere, meaning he shot him in the head. Hearn was 19 at the time and had a lengthy record that included burglary, robbery, assault, sexual assault and weapons possession. On Wednesday, Texas executed a convicted murderer, the eighth man to receive a lethal injection this year in the state, and the 14th inmate executed in America this year.
Suspenden minutos antes ejecucion de un asesino en Texas Huntsville (EEUU), 4 mar .- Un tribunal federal de apelaciones de Estados Unidos suspendio hoy la ejecucion de un hombre, apenas 17 minutos antes del momento en que se debia llevar a cabo, se anuncio oficialmente. Yokamon Hearn, de 25 anos, debia recibir una inyeccion letal en el penal de Huntsville (Texas) por el asesinato en 1998 de un hombre a quien mato de diez balazos en la cabeza despues de secuestrarlo en un negocio de lavado de automoviles de Dallas. Fuentes judiciales dijeron que el tribunal ordeno suspender la ejecucion para analizar una ultima apelacion presentada por los abogados de Hearn. En ella senalaron que Hearn es un retrasado mental y advirtieron de que el Tribunal Supremo de Estados Unidos ha prohibido la ejecucion de personas con esos problemas. La orden llego hasta la camara de la muerte 17 minutos antes del momento previsto para aplicarse la inyeccion y cuando Hearn habia terminado la que debia ser su ultima cena, dijeron las fuentes. Hearn habria sido el ejecutado numero 901 desde que el castigo fue restablecido en EEUU en 1976, el noveno este ano en Texas y el segundo en menos de 24 horas en el estado.
