JARRAT (USA), 19 MAR - E' stato giustiziato giovedi' nello Stato della Virginia un uomo che nel 1994 aveva violentato e ucciso una donna in una casa su un'isola della

Virginia.

La morte di Brian Lee Cherrix, di 30 anni, e' avvenuta alle 21:10 nel Centro di Correzione di Greensville - ha riferito il portavoce del Dipartimento di Correzione dello Stato, Larry Traylor - in seguito a un'iniezione letale.

Si e' trattato della prima esecuzione di quest'anno nello Stato della Virginia e la novantesima da quando la pena di morte e' stata reintrodotta dalla Corte Suprema nel 1976.

Cherrix adesco' Tessa Van Hart di 23 anni, madre di due bambini, per ucciderla in una casa disabitata sull'isola di Chincoteague, in Virginia, dopo aver ordinato una pizza nella notte del 27 gennaio del 1994. La vittima e' stata violentata e uccisa con due colpi d'arma da fuoco. Cherrix ha confessato il crimine.

VIRGINIA : Eastern Shore man executed for 1994 murder of young mother

A man who sodomized and murdered a young mother of 2 he lured to a vacant house on Chincoteague Island was executed Thursday night.

Brian Lee Cherrix, 30, convicted of killing 23-year-old Tessa Van Hart in 1994, was pronounced dead by lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Center at 9:10 p.m.

He had given up his final federal appeal and did not file a clemency petition with Gov. Mark R. Warner.

Police said Cherrix attacked Van Hart after she delivered a pizza to an empty home on the thinly populated island, then shot her twice in the head to prevent her from reporting the incident.

Cherrix becomes the 1st condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Virginia, and the 90th overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1982. Virginia trails only Texas (321) in the number of executions since the death penalty was re-legalized in America on July 2, 1976.

Cherrix becomes the 17th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 902nd overall in America since executions were resumed on January 17, 1977.
