His
story
Gregory
is a black man on death row for over 10 years for a murder he has
always been denied to have committed. He was accused by his partner
in crime, who thus obtained the life prison without parole instead
of the capital sentence. Since he was a boy, Gregory had been
suffering from severe mental problems, coming from terrible
accidents (he was both run over by a truck and struck by a lightning
as a young child) and from heavy family troubles, so that he was
forced to leave the secondary school because of his incapability of
apprehending. During his capital trial, his court attorney acted in
a so greatly slack way, that the jury was not even told about his
weak mental state. Gregory's execution is tragically set on February
18th 2003.
The
appeal to save Gregory
The
Community of Sant'Egidio invites everybody to share its appeal
aiming to spare Gregory's life from the execution, sending the
following statement to the competent authorities of Texas, as it
occurred in the past, by fax or e-mail.
URGENT
APPEAL BROUGHT IN BY THE COMMUNITY OF SANT'EGIDIO TO SAVE THE LIFE OF
GREGORY VAN ALSTYNE, SENTENCED TO DEATH
Your
Excellencies We are writing to express our deep concern over a ruling that
sentenced to death Mr. Gregory Van Alstyne, even though his evident mental
retard, a doubtful indictment and an inadequate legal defence during the
trial he underwent. We urge you to intervene on his behalf to prevent this
cruel and inhuman punishment from being meted out against him. We implore
you to ensure that this cruel and inhuman sentence is not carried out.
Respectfully
Yours
