Dominique
is Afro-American young man. He is 30 years old, now. When he
was sentenced to death he was just 19.
His
fate is the same of many
people like him, marked by a deep racial
prejudice. Today, actually, black people are just the
12% out of the population of United States. Nevertheless, they
count up the 42% out of the
inmates in the American death rows.
Dominique
was accused to have committed a murder during a robbery
carried out by a group of young boys. Really, there was nobody
who was able to witness his guilt. Anyway, he was captured
with violence and then submitted by the police to an
interrogation without any legal defence.
During
the following trial, his court-appointed lawyer
acted with extreme incompetence, bringing in the
documents which could attest his innocence out of due time. It
often happens, indeed, that poor people like Dominique who
cannot afford the costs to engage skilful lawyers, are forced
to rely on inexperienced legal representatives.
Dominiques
story is a hard one. He was born in a very deprived family. As
a child, he had to feel the pain coming from his parents
part. His mother, mentally ill, could not assure the necessary
care due to a growing-up boy. He passed his childhood and
teens among the forgotten suburbs of Huston, Texas. His
friends were black and Hispanic poor boys just like him.
Any
evidence demonstrating in a certain way his responsibility was
introduced during the trial that sentenced him to death. Today
Dominique is passing his days in the death row of Livingston,
Texas. His execution is sorrowfully set on October 26th
2004. |
