14 April 2008
Garoua - Cameroon
Liberation of 20 prisoners
thanks to the action of the Community
of
Sant'Egidio
14 April was a memorable day in the central prison of the town of Garoua in Cameroon, where the Community of Sant'Egidio in the last years has regularly been visiting the prisoners and addressing the many difficulties of their life. In fact, after several actions on the authorities, the Community succeeded to obtain the liberation of
20 prisoners (13 camerunese, a malian, and 6 ciadians) sentenced to different penalties, that for various reasons had not yet obtained the release, although they had right to it.
Some of them were able to benefit some remissions of penalty. For others it was necessary to pay the tax of release (necessary for liberation even if one has finished serving the penalty).
The event was considered exceptional and the liberation happened with a ceremony in the presence of the town authorities: the prefect, the provincial delegate for prisons, the mayor and others, together with prisoners and the friends of the Community of Sant' Egidio. |
