Programmes of adoption

The regular visits of the local Communities of Sant'Egidio to the many prisons of the country in order to bring food and medicines, as well as aid programmes and structural measures have made it possible to get a thorough grasp of the situation in many Mozambique prisons. 

Numerous prisoners have been discovered, who, once they have served their prison sentence, cannot be released because they are deprived of means. That is to say they are unable to pay the small sums (from 25 to 150 USD) necessary to obtain their liberty.

Remaining indefinitely in prison once the term established by law has elapsed, is not only profoundly unfair, but also constitutes a danger to personal health and contributes to the deterioration of everyday life.

The direct contact with these situations of suffering have led to the initiative "Free the Prisoners".

This aims above all at paying the sum of money requested at the end of the prison sentence, thus allowing the prisoner to return home.

To free a prisoner is to give life

50 cents a day is the price of life and freedom. That is why every contribution is important.

 Programmes of adoption:

• 150 USD to allow a prisoner who has already served one year of the sentence to return home.

• 25 USD to give economic assistance for shorter sentences.
