The Church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola Tiberina, was entrusted to the Community of Sant'Egidio from the Blessed John Paul II to realize a Shrine for the Martyrs of Faith of the 20th and 21st Century. Since then the Community has been collecting memories of men and women who in the past and present century have given their life for the Gospel and for the poor.
On October 19th a large number of Polish pilgrims, young people and families of the Community of Sant'Egidio gathered for a Mass during which memories of the three Polish Martyrs of our times, Karolina Kózkówna, Stanisław Starowieyski and Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko have been introduce in the Basilica.
These relics connect even more the Basilica to the Polish Church for in the chapel on the left side of the main altar, the Relics of St Adalbert are also kept.
