Yesterday, they arrived from Hong Kong to Cebu, the capital of the area hit by typhoon Haynan, to distribute emergency aid and programme the next interventions in cooperation with the diocese and other local organisations. In the first meetings performed on the spot, the gravity of the situation became clear.

In the villages at the North of the town, it is estimated that 90% of the infrastructures (power lines, hydric network for drinking water) have been destroyed, apart from the damage to agriculture and homes.

 Archbishop Palma personally delivered to the delegation of the Sant'Egidio Community a detailed list indicating the most affected villages - some of which have not yet received any form of help - and the most urgent needs:drinking water, food and temporary shelters.

Many families from Tacloban, the area hardest hit by the typhoon, have also sheltered in Cebu. A reception centre has been set up in a school where a teacher of the Community of Sant'Egidio works.
