COLLECTION IN FAVOUR OF THE VICTIMS
OF THE EARTHQUAKE IN SALVADOR

THE FIRST CARGO OF HUMANITARIAN AID

April 10th: The first cargo of humanitarian aid arrives from Rome. There are clothes, shoes, school kits. A cargo of medicines arrived from Germany a few days before.

THE HUMANITARIAN AID IS DISTRIBUTED

The aid was used immediately and distributed among the tents of the Cafetalon (in the photo) and La Herradura, a village of fishermen, where the Community brought humanitarian aid following the devastation of the Mitch hurricane. It wasn't spared even by the two earthquakes there were this year.

A HOLIDAY WITH THE CHILDREN

At the beginning of the Holy Week a holiday was organised for over a hundred children from the tents of the Cafetalon to Planes de Renderos, just outside the city of San Salvador.
They are children who have followed for several months the scuola popolare, a school which is done four times a week among the tents. In the months following the earthquake, by abandoning their homes in their districts the children also had to leave school. The Scuola popolare of the Community gives them the possibility to begin a life as normal as possible.

The holiday at Planes de Renderos was a happy moment: the children were in a warm and welcoming place, where it was possible to wash oneself, to change clothes and eat well, both for the children and for some young mothers that accompanied them.

But it also meant to deepen one's friendship, to open one's heart, to tell the stories of sorrow, of ruined families, of little orphans. The happy and warm atmosphere was a comfort for everybody.

THE SECOND CARGO OF HUMANITARIAN AID TO ASSIST THE RECONSTRUCTION HAS LEFT

On May 3rd the second cargo left Rome for the victims of the earthquake in Salvador. It contains especially humanitarian aid to assist the reconstruction. There are blankets, clothes, medicines, but also 27,000 lamp-bulbs; 5,000 neon tubes, 200 plastic containers for water, 400 work outfits, wheel-barrows and ladders. It will reach San Salvador by ship in fifteen days. All the material is to support the reconstruction works after the earthquake.
A part of the lamp-bulbs will be used for a village struck by the second earthquake of February 13th that the Community wants to rebuild. Another part will be distributed together with the water containers among the people still sheltered in the tents of the Cafetalon where the Community still does the school with the children 4 times a week.

Six packages of medicines collected and selected by the Community were also sent; they will be distributed at the pharmacy of the village of La Herradura, which was struck by the earthquake of January 13th and where the Community has been present since the devastation of the Mitch hurricane.
