JUST THINK ABOUT IT!

THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE HUNGRY

The lack of food is one of the most dramatic aspects of poverty. Even in the large, wealthy European cities it is easier and easier to see persons who dig through trash bins looking for food.

This problem involves not only people who are homeless: there are a lot of old people whose pensions are not sufficient to cover all their basic expenses; there are also a lot of families in financial difficulties because they have low incomes or they have no incomes at all. All of them apply to the assistance centres very often. .

In order to meet the difficult condition of these people the Community collects foodstuffs in different places (supermarkets, work places, schools, food industries) and distributes them at the aid centres. For instance, in 2000, about 200 tons of foodstuffs on the whole were distributed in Rome (oil, pasta, rice, beans, tinned food, biscuits and children's food, etc.).

Food is also sent to different countries - for instance to Albania for refugees of Kosovo during last war - together with other essential supplies.
