Days of intense work in Tokyo on the issue of the death penalty: two events have been organised on this issue by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the European Commission.

the question is highly topical since, after a period of “de facto" moratorium of almost 20 months, Japan resumed capital executions in March 2012, implementing three sentences, while the imposition of death sentences has never ceased: today the inmates on death row are 134.

On 29 October, the debate on the issue "No justice without life" was held at the Italian Institute of Culture. PROGRAMME. 

During the debate, a voice was given to the case of Iwao Hakamada, who has been on death row for 45 years. READ

Tomorrow, 31 October, following an appeal by 42 European Ministers  (READ), the debate will go to the Japanese Parliament. PROGRAMME 

These two days offer an opportunity for parliamentarians, citizens, journalists and activists to question about the future of  the death penalty in Japan. An international respite to support the commitment of those in Japan who have long struggled for the defence of life.
