Without love the 'Elderly' die. These are the words Mary, 107 years old, the latter years spent with the company of the Community in the old people�s home of Via Magna Grecia in Rome, used to explain the secret of her extraordinary longevity.
It is also a sentence that became the title of the conference with which the Community of Sant�Egidio opens a series of events that are meant to celebrate 30 years of friendship with the old people.

In 1972 the Community of Sant�Egidio was a mainly juvenile experience and was still concentrated in Rome. At the time the sociological relevance of the old people was not so clear as it is today. However those young people, who had began to cross the invisible boundaries between the world of the rich and that of the poor, felt that the loneliness and the abandonment of the old people were a wound that had to be healed.
It was the start of a friendship between generations that became ever stronger throughout these 30 years. The Community accepted the human and cultural challenge to work so that old people may be fully placed within the human family where all generations have a role and place.

Thus the movement �Long Live the Elderly� was born. Its initiatives - the ones favouring just norms on immigration in Europe, against institutionalisation of the old people, in support of the program of international foster care or of the project against AIDS, and many others � are an important part of the life of the Community as it is clear also from the pages of the web site.

Thirty years together were able to produce a human and cultural proposal for a world where life becomes longer, while its meaning is often denied to those who are old or to those who live �too long�. The old people of Sant�Egidio show us that nobody is ever too old or too weak to do something for others. They state that longevity is a blessing and not a threat. They do not only speak to us about the past but they show us a way for our own future.
