Last 2nd July, the explosion of a tanker in the village of Sange, South-Kivu, midway from Bukayu and Uvira, caused 240 deaths and a large number of injured, quickly moved to the nearest hospitals.
Our Communities went to visit the survivors, who are seriously injured. The Hospital of Bukavu is hosting 67 people, of whom two are dead for severe burns.
The victims are mostly poor people who were trying to collect some of the petrol coming out of the tanker, or a number of homeless observing the scene, as Pascal a young deaf-mute begging in that road. We met Mr Zorino in the hospital and he told us how the tanker suddenly blew up when he was desperately trying to move the children away from it.
The Communities of Sant’Egidio are helping the survivors bringing them food, because most of them have no relatives in the surroundings helping them.
The Hospital of Huvira accepted 55 injured having terrible burns all over their bodies: the local Community of Sant’Egidio went to visit and help them. The Community gathered in prayer to sustain the injured and to remember all those who died in this dramatic event.
