The houses of the children

On 30th November the nutritional centre of the Community of Sant’Egidio in Beira, Mozambique’s second city was opened.
This is the third centre in Africa, after the first in Matola, Mozambique, and the second in Blantyre in Malawi.
The centre is managed and run by the activists of the DREAM Programme and it is open for the children of the neighbourhood who live in severe conditions of poverty.
The centre is meant to be a place where to get food and attention, but also a space where to study, play and learn the value of friendship and peaceful living together.

The capacity is for about a thousand children. After very few days, the centre is welcoming already a hundred children, but the number is rapidly growing.
‘Our little friends having lunch with us are spreading the news’ said Josefa, the activist of the DREAM programme and Director of the centre.

She also commented: ‘On the very first day, it was truly amazing to see the children's surprised faces when they saw the food coming. They have never seen such a big portion before and they were esitating because they did not know where to start. The other big novely is having the opportunity to wash their hands: all of them more than once during the launch run towards the taps: none of them have running water at home.’
